In a smackdown between US cellular carriers AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, which network reigns supreme? That was the question answered by a new report by performance analytics firm Metrico Wireless Inc. that compared the carriers to determine who has the fastest and most reliable network.

To perform the tests, Metrico grabbed more than 21,000 web pages, did over 8,000 speed tests and made more than 6,000 voice calls from the iPhone 4S. The company has a proprietary measurement platform that is used to monitor the performance of the carriers.

The fastest network in the comparison was AT&T, with maximum download speeds of 6,047 Kbps and a mean speed of 3,210 Kbps. Verizon was well behind in the speed race, with a maximum download speed of 2,371 Kbps and a mean of 1,071 Kbps. In other words, the average download speed for AT&T was almost triple that of Verizon. Sprint was even slower, with a maximum speed of 1,767 Kbps and a mean speed of only 581 Kbps.

When it came to call failures, Verizon had the fewest -- only 2.1% of test calls failed. Sprint was the worst network for dropping calls, with 3.7% of calls dropping. AT&T was in the middle with a failure rate of 2.8%.

Metrico also found that the iPhone 4S has an average dropped call rate of about 1.4%, which is poor in comparison with competing smartphones. However, in terms of data task reliability, the iPhone 4S was at or near 100%, making the newest iPhone among the best in the world.

The blog post also describes “Let it Rain,” one of the new Assignments in the expansion. “To complete this assignment, players must score 20 kills with Light Machine Guns and two mortar kills. The game will keep track of how far along you have come to fulfill it. When you have met the requirements, you will unlock a new Back to Karkand weapon (with a matching set of dog tags) to use on any map including the base game. You will also unlock the new Creeping Death Assignment.”

Those who originally pre-ordered Battlefield 3 will get the expansion for free, which will be released some time in December.

Even a year after the initial launch of the Kinect hardware, Harmonix?s Dance Central still remains one of the most compelling reasons to own Microsoft?s motion-sensing hardware. While this certainly speaks in part to the paucity of great experiences the Kinect has produced since then, it doesn?t take away from the fact that Dance Central did for shakin? your rump what Guitar Hero and Rock Band did for making you feel like a rock star. Even if you?ve got two left feet and you?d never survive on an actual dance floor, you can still feel like a lock-poppin? bad-ass in your living room, working up a decent sweat in the process. Dance Central 2 doesn?t reinvent this particular wheel, but it improves upon it with new features that range from using simple voice commands to queue up your favorite tracks to two-player simultaneous play. Dance Central 2 doesn?t feel as ambitious as the original Dance Central, though that?s admittedly asking a lot, since it still manages to fully replace its predecessor in every meaningful way.

Keeping with the Harmonix ethos of treating its games like platforms to be built upon, existing Dance Central players can seamlessly use any existing DLC they?ve purchased in Dance Central 2, and for a $5 fee, they can import all of the songs from the first game as well. Even if you haven?t already indulged in DLC, or this is your first Dance Central, the 44 tracks included on the disc are ample enough. Although it?s a fresh group of songs, the makeup of the Dance Central 2 playlist doesn?t stray too far from the tone established by the first game, with a distinct focus on modern club hits, and enough recognizable, older dance hits to keep the mix accessible. For every Donna Summer or Bobby Brown song, there?s a gaggle of David Guetta, Pitbull, and Usher tracks, but even if you don?t know the songs, they remain highly danceable.

Dancing with a friend cuts the awkwardness of pretending to know what you're doing.

This is partially because Harmonix has chosen a collection of really catchy tunes, regardless of era, but most of the credit has to go to the intuitive instruction and constant feedback of DC2?s dancing system, inherited almost whole-cloth from the first game. The idea is simple--you square up with a digital avatar, mimicking their moves with the help of a set of constantly rotating flash-cards--the flash-cards giving you the basic idea of what the next move will look like, and the avatar filling in the rest. If you?re not quite hitting your marks, the offending body parts will light up with a red outline, making it easier to adjust as is necessary. It feels roughly as responsive and accurate as it did in the original Dance Central, which may sound like faint praise, but without the strength of the game?s motion-recognition and its ability to provide you meaningful feedback in the moment about what you need to adjust in order to really kill it, the rest of the package would be meaningless.

Dance Central 2 builds on this strong base with some new features that seem so fundamental--like support for two-player simultaneous play, and the structured crew challenge story mode that introduces you to the game?s colorful collection of dance crews--it?s kind of hard to believe they weren?t in the original Dance Central to begin with. There are other additions, like the ability to use voice commands to quickly queue up a track; the ability to build your own custom playlists of songs; the improved flexibility of the instructional Break It Down mode, which makes it easier to single out specific moves in a routine that might have been giving you trouble; or the choice to make the interpretive freestyle sections of a song optional. These only come through iteration, but still have a meaningful impact on the experience. The whole thing feels more complete, and just a little bit slicker, with even flashier presentation, and more personality for the neon-futuristic dance crews.

Dance Central 2 is better than Dance Central, though that margin will vary significantly depending on how dissatisfied you were with the original?s lack of two-player support or a structured story mode to ease you into the experience. Personally, I was happy to just have more Dance Central, but what I got was better than that.

Rumor: iOS updates to address remaining battery issues, add new Siri commands

German blog Macerkopf claims it's heard directly from an Apple software engineer that iOS 5.0.2 "should arrive before the end of next week" and will address remaining battery issues that have affected some iPhone 4S units even after the recent 5.0.1 update.

Macerkopf also claims that a larger update (which the blog assumes will be iOS 5.1) will come with updated commands for Siri that will allow users to access hardware functions via voice commands. Currently Siri gets apologetic when you ask it to do things like take a picture or turn Bluetooth on/off, but Macerkopf claims these commands will be added to Siri in the 5.1 update.

Although Macerkopf hasn't supplied any direct evidence for its claims, this rumor still sounds plausible. Apple obviously wants to address any remaining battery issues as quickly as it can before the media decides to spin another "-gate" controversy out of it, and adding basic hardware commands to Siri just makes good sense.

Square adds customer loyalty, printable receipts

Mobile credit card transaction company Square updated its iOS app this week to include several new features for merchants and customers. Perhaps the biggest update to Square 2.2 is the ability for merchants to reward their regular customers with customized loyalty programs. The app now allows a merchant to define what a "regular" customer is (ie: five visits a week, twelve visits a month, etc) and assign an automatic discount to their tab when they check out.

Another big feature of the latest update is the ability to print physical receipts. Now the app can communicate with receipt printers so the customer can walk away with printed proof of their purchase instead of having to rely on an email or text message. Plus, the app has added the ability to wirelessly open the merchants cash register when the merchant taps "tender" on the app -- a small but nice feature at, say, cafés where a person might pay by card but want quarters in exchange for a dollar bill to get a paper. The feature also makes it easier for the cashier to store paper coupons in their cash drawer as some cash registers will not open a drawer unless the transaction is tendered in-register. Additionally the 2.2 update also allows merchants to create a "tips" field on the checkout screen.

Square recently surpassed US$2 billion in payments per year an usage by both customers and merchants is sure to increase as more people become comfortable making transactions on their mobile devices. Square is a free download from the App Store.

Vimessa: Video voice mail for iPhone and iPad

With the holidays coming up, it's a time to get together -- physically or virtually -- with friends and relatives. On those situations where you can't travel to be with your loved ones, wouldn't it be nice if you can send them a quick, free video message? That's the thought behind Vimessa, a free video messaging app from Serious Fox Corp.

If you send a video message to someone who doesn't currently have the app, they'll get a text message with a link to your video. The messages are secure, and the only people who can send Vimessages are people who have your phone number.

The developers say that they think of this as "video voicemail" for the iOS platform, and they plan on launching versions for other platforms soon. The app is free, although the company plans to also roll out special services with in-app purchases.

As the developer notes, Vimessa gives you the immediacy of text messages with the emotion of face-to-face discussions. The messages can be viewed on your timeline, so you don't need to "answer" a video call. It's an interesting concept, and one that would be a wonderful addition to Apple's FaceTime.

Steve Jobs wanted to bypass cell carriers entirely

Speaking at a Law Seminars International event in Seattle, former T-Mobile head John Stanton said Steve Jobs wanted to launch the iPhone without carrier support. Part of his vision was to create a carrier for the iPhone that ran on unlicensed WiFi spectrum. "He wanted to replace carriers," said Stanton.

Between 2005 and 2006, Jobs talked at length with Stanton who has a strong background in wireless communications. Stanton was as an early employee at McCaw Cellular, the first wireless carrier in the US and the progenitor to AT&T. He also served as the head of Voicestream which eventually became T-Mobile. By 2007, Jobs had given up on the carrier idea. Instead of pursuing its own network, Apple signed an exclusive deal with Cingular/AT&T and the rest is history.

The Daily Quest: Let's talk about this right meow

WoW Insider's on a Daily Quest to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

My very first character ever back in vanilla WoW was a druid. I loved the class, even though it took me a while to get the hang of it. But once the whole aspect of being able to shift in and out of various forms to survive darn near anything kicked in, I was relatively unstoppable. I switched from Alliance to Horde after hitting level 60, and from druid to priest. But I still loved druids, and I loved raiding with them. One of the top druids in my vanilla raiding guild was simply brilliant; he was a healer, but he'd swap between forms all the time if there was something he could do to help.

And that was the druid class to me, in a nutshell -- the extreme versatility of being able to do just about anything because you could simply shift forms. I loved it. I still love it, and I have two druid alts, though I rarely play them these days (not enough time in the day). There've been some pretty interesting conversations around the blogosphere about the state of druids in the upcoming expansion, however, well worth reading.

• Restokin has a two-part post detailing what exactly is wrong with having a melee moonkin.

Review: LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 Does the Franchise Right

It's difficult for me to articulate why I love TT Games' various LEGO titles so much. Maybe it's my deep-seeded love of collecting digital trinkets, baubles, and doodads that stems back to Nintendo 64's many collect-a-thons. Perhaps it's the emphasis they place on splitscreen play that has become an endangered species in this post-online-multiplayer landscape that gaming currently resides in. Or maybe it's the fact that TT has continually tackled beloved properties and delivered some of the best gaming experiences those licenses have ever seen.

Alright, so maybe it's not all that hard for me to define why I love games like LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7. If you played any of the three other LEGO titles released in the past year and a half, then you'll need little in terms of a tutorial: Choose your character from a pool of hundreds, and then explore every nook and cranny of the license with the goal of destroying, rebuilding, or otherwise terraforming the landscape. This time around you guide The Boy Who Lived through the final three books in his saga. With Voldemort resurrected, it's up to you to traverse England and destroy the seven Horcruxes that make up the soul of the Dark Lord. As always, the story is presented in charming cut-scenes that dole out whimsy in hefty amounts.

Daily iPhone App: Asteroids Gunner

I launched Asteroids Gunner with low expectations. Asteroids is one of the oldest games around, and it's hard to see how even Atari can squeeze anything more from this relic. But lo and behold, it has. Asteroids Gunner is a remarkable freemium dual-stick shooter, turning the top-down 2D gameplay of the original into something graphically impressive and addicting at the same time.

The graphics and sound are probably what you'll notice first. It obviously looks better than the old 2D line drawings, yet the beautiful asteroids, ship, rocks and backgrounds are clean and simple enough to put the gameplay front and center (the mechanics are nearly identical to the old Asteroids game). The ambient soundtrack deserves a mention as well, as it sounds great.

That's great, but gameplay is the star of Asteroids Gunner. Not only do the dual-stick controls do their job well, but there are tons of rewards to attain as you break apart rocks and guide your ship around the gamespace. You can collect crystals to upgrade your ships, or a surprising amount of powerups, including a gravity shockwave, a spread shot, a time warp slowdown and even an "ice laser" that fires a straight line across the screen. There are also many of achievements to earn, so every few minutes, through every wave, you get a lot of great bonuses and nice rewards that keep the game moving along.

It starts off easy and gets harder, but there's over 150 waves to play through, which means there's a lot of content for a game that beings relatively simply. There's also full Game Center integration, and three different ships to unlock and play with. Perhaps best of all, Asteroids Gunner is free. You can pay some in-app purchases to upgrade your ship or weapons, but the core game is so well tuned that they aren't necessary.

I was surprised by Asteroids Gunner. It's a solid game that updates a classic well. Definitely give it a download.

Microsoft Xbox Turns 10 Years Old Today

It was 10 years ago today that Microsoft entered the videogame console business with the release of the Xbox in North America. The system debuted at $299.99 and its release came more than a year after the PlayStation 2 had already debuted in western markets and three days before the GameCube, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary in North America on Friday. Xbox was the most powerful of the three consoles during that generation (four if you wish to include the Dreamcast), though that didn't translate into sales -- PS2 ended up dominating the console market for much of the decade, but Xbox did prove to be influential in the long run.

The Xbox name came from the original idea of creating a DirectX Box, DirectX being the name for a set of APIs used on computers. ('DirectX Box' ended up being shortened to 'Xbox.') The system was, like the PS2 and unlike the Dreamcast and GameCube, capable of playing DVDs in addition to games. Dolby 5.1 support and an integrated Ethernet port were both standard, as was an 8GB hard drive, a new concept for videogame consoles at the time. The obvious benefits of a hard drive included the ability to save games without a memory card and rip music from CDs that could then be listened to as a soundtrack in certain games. Its presence later opened the door for downloadable content in games like Halo 2. (A standard hard drive was abandoned for certain models of the Xbox 360, resulting in developers avoiding mandatory installs no matter the cost.)

Leading the crest of the current wave of post-DDR dancing games, Ubisoft established a pretty strong mass-market following with its Just Dance series on the Wii. As you might imagine, trying to mimic the on-screen choreography with just a regular Wii Remote in your hand to register the dance moves didn?t provide terrific fidelity. The gameplay was more of a timid suggestion than an outright mandate, and the games were more functional as living-room soundtracks than actual games. It?s an issue that you?d hope would be addressed as the series transitions to the technically superior Kinect with Just Dance 3, and while it?s an improvement, it still falls well short of the platform standards set by Harmonix?s Kinect launch title, Dance Central. Which is a real shame, because there?s a ton of songs featured in Just Dance 3 that--were the game?s motion detection able to keep up with the choreography--would be a lot of fun to dance to, as well as some ambitious multiplayer and community features that, quite frankly, deserve a better game.

If just dancin? is all you?re interested in, you can hop straight from the main menu into a big list of songs, all playable from the get-go. Just looking at this list, it?s easy to get excited, assuming you?ve got a taste for popular dance songs from the past 30-plus years of pop music, with an emphasis on the past decade or so. Current artists include The Black Eyed Peas, Cee Lo Green, Katy Perry, and LMFAO, and the hits stretch all the way back to Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, A-ha, and C+C Music Factory. It?s a populist playlist with lots of one-hit wonders, but it would seem that the first step in getting players dancing is giving them plenty of songs they already know. As with previous Just Dance games, the dancers you?ll be imitating are digitized videos of actual dancers, usually in thematically appropriate wardrobe, and everything?s been pushed through a glowing neon filter to give it a weird candy-raver vibe.

Squeezing four players into the frame compounds the sloppy move detection.

Some songs feature choreography that supports more than one player at once--up to four, depending on the song--and these group routines often have unique moves for each player, as well as interaction between multiple players. Regardless of the number of players you actually have, the choreography can be pretty ambitious. Though you can always choose to play on either easy or normal--which requires you to move either just from your waist up or your whole body--and each song comes with an intensity rating, you have to sift through the big list to find the easier stuff, and once you?re in a song, you?re not given great direction on the upcoming moves. That learning a full dance routine takes some repetition shouldn?t be too surprising, I suppose, but Just Dance 3 does a rotten job of easing you into it, providing minimal feedback if you?re doing it wrong. There seems to be very little crossover in dance moves from one routine to another, which makes each routine rather unique, but it also means that what you learn in one routine rarely caries over to the next, like you?re starting from scratch every time.

The real fundamental problem, though, is that the dance routines are just too complex for the Kinect to keep up. You might expect that this means the game has trouble registering your moves correctly, and that definitely does happen, but more often, it will just give you a pass, so long as you?ve got the basic idea. Actually, even ?the basic idea? is being generous, as I managed to score decently on songs doing The Carlton the entire time, or just sitting on my couch, waving my arms around. It?s far too lenient, stripping what little motivation you might have to learn the actual routine. It?s even apparent from the game?s twitchy menus that the developer was still wrestling with how to get the most out of the Kinect when it shipped Just Dance 3.

With better motion detection, recording your own routines would've been a game-changer.

That's kind of a shame, because outside of the fundamentals, there are some promising ideas in the game?s Just Create section. You can record your own routines, which the game actually does a pretty good job of compositing and rendering to look like the in-game dancers, then upload them for others to dance along with. You can also record yourself dancing one of the game?s predefined routines, which, upon playback, the game will then superimpose on the regular dancer, with the notion of providing you with some insight into how you can improve your routine, though I didn?t find this mode particularly useful.

The Just Dance series feels like it?s headed in the right direction with Just Dance 3, but it still has a long way to go. If you were satisfied with the Just Dance experience on the Wii, and you find the soundtrack to Just Dance 3 appealing, you probably won?t be disappointed. But you should know that you can do better.

Appcelerator: iOS still has highest developer interest, Kindle Fire heating up

The latest Appcelerator survey says developers are still most interested in putting together apps for the iOS platform, with 91 percent of them "very interested" in developing for the iPhone, and 88 percent going for the iPad. iOS 5 was also cited by developers surveyed as the most significant announcement for mobile in the last quarter.

But just because iOS is leading the pack doesn't mean developers aren't still looking at other platforms. In fact, the Kindle Fire is shooting up the charts of developer interest, and it's sitting at just a few points lower (49 compared to 53 percent) than the iPad was back when it launched. Android in general has been tempting developer interest, but the Kindle Fire specifically has developers giving it a serious look.

That said, reviews are coming out today on the Fire (just as the device is shipping), and they say that the device doesn't have much to offer besides price when compared to the iPad. But as any freemium developer knows, a cheaper price can make for a bigger install base. If the Kindle Fire turns out to burn up the tablet charts, we could see more developers heading off to that platform in the future.
